Flying as a Family of Six

I wish I could've recorded the faces of fellow travelers giving us crazy looks as we walked past them in the airport. Imagine seeing one parent holding a toddler while corralling two other kids towards the gate and the other parent pushing a wagon full of bags with a newborn. Honestly I'm impressed how organized we were flying with four kids under five years old. I certainly didn't feel organized in the moment, but in hindsight, I have to give myself a pat on the back. I'm a planner by nature and I like to be as prepared as possible. Because of this, you get to benefit from my own trial and error. Today's post is all about the must-haves for flying as a family with young kids. It's important to have the right things packed for yourself as well as your kids.

So, what do you need to set your family up for success?!

Travel Bag

As a mom, you need a bag that fits all the things, especially when traveling. Not only do you pack for yourself, but you also must think ahead for the whole fam. Bosidu Travel Duffel Bags have all the features you'll need. There is a ton of space in the main opening of this bag, as well as seven pockets. My favorite feature of their bags is the extra shoe compartment located on the bottom. For my trip, I used this space for my makeup and toiletries so I could easily access them upon arrival at our hotel. I also love the trolley sleeve on this bag so I could easily slip the travel bag onto the handle of my suitcase. If you're in need of a travel or weekender type of bag, THIS is it. I highly recommend exploring Bosidu Travel Bags and use KATRINA20 to save.

Packing Cubes

In my opinion, packing cubes are a must for any type of travel. They keep your outfits organized and you can easily separate clean clothes from dirty towards the end of your trip. If you have a family, packing cubes are crucial. I typically use a cube for myself, one for Henry, one for the kids' day outfits, and one for the kids' pajamas. There are plenty of affordable options on Amazon, whether you are looking for a neutral set that you and hubby can share or a fun set just for yourself. Once you start using packing cubes, you won't know any other way!

Stroller Wagon

The Baby Trend Expedition 2-in-1 Stroller Wagon Plus is a must-have! Honestly I use this wagon on the daily, but it was a huge game changer with this trip. I prefer the wagon over my double stroller because you can pack and stack so much more! It doesn't break down as small as most strollers but they still allowed me to gate check it. This wagon helped a ton with lugging tiny humans and ALL of our bags through the airport.

Kids Tablets

All hats off to the mamas that don't do screen time, but I think we can all agree there's a time and a place for everything. A flight is definitely one of those! Our favorite tablets are the Amazon Fire Kids Tablets. There are a ton of apps and games that you can download to use offline during your flight. We download a few movies on Disney+ and find new games with the kids for each trip. Not to mention, these devices are much more affordable and kid friendly compared to an iPad.

Of course you need headphones for a flight so why not get your kids some fun ones! This way they're also excited to wear them. Once again my go-to place Amazon has plenty of affordable options. Some of my faves include this basic style or these fun themed ones - unicorn, cat, spiderman, and batman.

Toddler Travel Tray / Backpacks

The Lulyboo Toddler Activity Travel Tray is so good that I have an entire blog post breaking down all the amazing features. The main thing you need to know is that it's a tray that sits on your child's lap for activities AND it's a fully functional backpack. I can't rave about this travel tray enough!

Melissa & Doug Activity Books

Melissa & Doug is one of our favorite brands of kid's toys and they have the best on-the-go line which is perfect for travel. Our favorites include the reusable puffy stickers, water wow! reusable color, and the color blast activity books. These sets are so fun for the kids and mess free!

A few random notes I'd add is to surprise your kids with something new the morning of your flight - a water bottle, activity book, headphones and/or backpack. This sets the tone of excitement for the day! Also, if you didn't already know, you can gate check your stroller and car seat carrier. This means you can bring these items through security and check them in at your gate. If you have multiple kids, I recommend asking the attendant if it's a full flight or not. I prefer to have the car seat carrier on the flight (without buying a whole extra seat), so baby can sleep comfortably and then I'm able to help more with the other kids.

Flying as a family is a lot of work, but it's also a lot of fun and ALWAYS worth it! Keep in mind that your kids reflect your energy so pump them up and be a calming force during the day of travel.
